چکیده

Edge states in the integral quantum Hall e ect on a lattice are reviewed from a topological point of view. For a system with edges which is realized inevitably in an experimental situation, the Hall conductance xy is given by a winding number of the edge state on a complex energy surface. A relation between two topological invariants (bulk and edge) is also clari ed. In a macroscopic system, mixture of the edge states are exponentially small and negligible. Quantum Coherence between the two edge states gives the quatization of xy . However, when the system is mesoscopic, the mixture between the edges states plays a physical role. We also focus on this point and show some numerical results.

Measurement of topological invariants in a 2D photonic system

A hallmark feature of topological physics is the presence of one-way propagating chiral modes at the system boundary1,2. The chirality of edge modes is a consequence of the topological character of the bulk. For example, in a non-interacting quantum Hall model, edge modes manifest as mid-gap states between two topologically distinct bulk bands. The bulk– boundary correspondence dictates that th...

Multiterminal conductance of a Floquet topological insulator.

We report on simulations of the dc conductance and quantum Hall response of a Floquet topological insulator using Floquet scattering theory. Our results reveal that laser-induced edge states lead to quantum Hall plateaus once imperfect matching with the nonilluminated leads is lessened. The magnitude of the Hall plateaus, however, is not directly related to the number and chirality of all the e...

Energy Levels of InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dot Lasers with Different Sizes

In this paper, we have studied the strain, band-edge, and energy levels of cubic InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) surrounded by GaAs. It is shown that overall strain value is larger in InGaAs-GaAs interfaces, as well as in smaller QDs. Also, it is proved that conduction and valence band-edges and electron-hole levels are size dependent; larger QD sizes appeared to result in the lower recombination...

Topological orders in Silicon photonics

Topological features – global properties which are not discernible locally – have attracted tremendous research attention in many fields of physics, ranging from condensed matter to ultra cold gases. Recently, photonic systems have been under investigation to explore various types of topological orders and to potentially develop robust optical devices. In this project, we investigated various a...

Edge states and integer quantum Hall effect in topological insulator thin films

The integer quantum Hall effect is a topological state of quantum matter in two dimensions, and has recently been observed in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films. Here we study the Landau levels and edge states of surface Dirac fermions in topological insulators under strong magnetic field. We examine the formation of the quantum plateaux of the Hall conductance and find two diff...
